What is Kombucha?

Health should be simple. Kombucha is tea created by a fermentation process that has vitamins, good bacteria and antioxidants. All we have done is to put it in a pretty bottle for you.

Kombucha is a carbonated health drink based on organic tea and contains living bacteria/yeast culture, B-vitamins, antioxidants, organic acids and enzymes.

It’s a fizzy and refreshing thirst quencher – a great alternative to Vitamin Water and energy drinks. Svensk Kombucha is brewed in Stockholm, Sweden with kombucha-cultures of the highest quality.

Kombucha consists of a living bacteria/yeast culture which can be soothing for the stomach and aid in digestion. Thanks to its organic acids and enzymes that forms during the brewing process. Kombucha has a detoxifying effect on the body. It works well in combination with your daily workout – like yoga.

Kombucha is rich on B-vitamins – which helps the body to extract energy from food and break down fat. B-vitamins also ensures hair, skin and nails keep strong and healthy.

The tea contains antioxidants – which helps protect the cells from free radicals; thereby, improving the immune system.

For that morning energy boost, drink kombucha for breakfast; drink it during the day when you feel like something refreshing or for dinner. Stack up with kombucha energy before or after your workout. It’s a great alternative to snacks or a glass of wine in the evening.

Kombucha was first brewed in China 220 BC and was then called “Elixir of life”. Our Swedish-made kombucha is based on fermented organic tea and is a “Live Food”. Live Food means the beverage hasn’t been heated up during production, which leaves all nutritions still fresh in it.

Svensk Kombucha is brewed out of organic tea, Swedish sugar (used for fermentation process) and Kombucha culture (Acetobacteria, Gluconacetobacter, Saccharomyces).

Each and every bottle is lovingly brewed by hand in Stockholm. Kombucha is slightly carbonated so be careful when opening. Stock in refrigerator and avoid storing in direct sunlight. Opened bottle should be consumed within three days. Recommended daily intake 100ml-250ml.

History of Kombucha

Kombucha can be traced back to 220 BC. Scientists believe it was ancient China, the first and mythological Qin Dynasty, who started brewing the beverage and called it “Elixir of Life”. In ancient Japanese texts Kombucha is mentioned the first time in 414 AD when emperor Inkyo was troubled with internal digestive problems and summoned his doctor, Dr Kombu, who introduced it to the imperial court and – according to old scrolls – has given the beverage its name.


During the 60’s Austrian scientists started to interest themselves for Kombucha and came to the conclusion it was at least as healthy as yoghurt, which made the beverage popular in eastern Europe.

The big break for Kombucha came in 1993 when it became a hit in the United States when Tom Valentine, writer, radio show host and founder of one of US largest healthstore chain, wrote a long article in the medical paper “Search for Health” about Kombucha’s healthy effects which started a chain of health debates in media.


About us

Svensk Kombucha is a small microbrewery in Stockholm – which started its business during spring, 2011. We started drinking Kombucha during our college years in early 2000’s in New York where it is a common and popular health drink. We missed our daily bottled of “Booch” back in Sweden and started brewing our own.

Why should I drink Kombucha?

Kombucha is a refreshing and slightly tart thirst quencher when you are after an alternative to energy drinks and Vitamin Water and want to recharge your batteries with something else than sugar and overly-stimulating additives. You can enjoy the beverage for breakfast or lunch instead of coffee or morning juice. Kombucha is also great as a quick snack after a hard day at work or school, or as a low-calorie alternative to an evening snack.

Does Kombucha go well together with yoga and workouts?

Kombucha is perfect to drink before and after a yoga- and workout session for energy-generating B-vitamins, antioxidants and other nutrients.

How do you drink Kombucha?

Kombucha should be served chilled but is also fine room temperature.

Why does it look and taste slightly differently from bottle to bottle?

It’s hard to know beforehand how the fermentation will come out since Svensk Kombucha is unpasteurized. That’s why taste, carbonation and contents can differ from batch to batch.

Is sugar used in the brewingprocess?

The sugar is not for us but is used a nutrition source for the Kombucha culture, itself. One can say that the culture lives off of the sugar and nutrition from the brewed tea. When fermentation process is complete a Kombucha Natural contains 6,3 grams of sugar per 100 ml. If you compare it to other juices and beverages, one can see that for example freshly pressed orange juice contains 10.6 grams per 100 ml and carrot juice 6.4 grams.

Can you get rid of the pulp?

Svensk Kombucha is unpasteurized and can form pulp in the bottle after its been bottled which is actually a good sign of active and living Kombucha culture. If you want to get rid of the pulp simply open the cap to get air in the bottle, close and shake carefully.

How long can you store a bottle?

Unopened bottle should be stored in the refrigerator and will keep several months thanks to the fermentation. We have put a best before of 4 months because the juices we flavor with might have a shorter expiration date.

How long can you store an opened bottle?

Opened bottles should also be stored in refrigerator and consumed with three days.

Can diabetics and pregnant or breast feeding women consume kombucha?

Kombucha might have a detoxing effect on the body. However, you should check with your doctor before consuming because it contains sugar, which is used during the brewing process and the bacteria culture used.
